Girl Amnesia

I don't really get out that much more anymore. Two decades of brutal hanging out has sort of numbed me to social gatherings, and I tend to stick to close simple things like wife, movie, car, home. But last night I found myself at one of those mixed "couples dinner" gatherings where foreign business guys bring their Chinese girlfriends. The girl on my left kept reminding me that we met 4 times before, once 7 years ago because she was a stewardress, and served me my dinner. How could I forget her!? She came once to my club 4 years ago, How could I forget that?...and then met me once at a studio session, You don't remember? Oh, and her friend was the ex-girlfriend of the bartender at a place we managed 5 years ago. Man, I was totally getting the third degree from this chick because I didn't remember her. So I'm pretty much socially fumbling through the evening, when Jerry next to me, introduces his new girlfriend, "Hi, I'm Sandra, we met before 5 years ago! You don't remember? My old boyfriend used to be a singer." I thought I was coming down with like instant amnesia or something. I had no clue. More than no clue. I was completely and socially blank. Just went through the evening culturally pinch hitting, flipping back and forth between American and Chinese, realizing how little I had in common with either culture anymore. Very unsettling.
