Meeting your Pop Idol

Corbett | June 4, 2003 12:54 AM

I've been in Asia for 15 years, and I've been pretty immune to the whole pop idol thing. Well, except for one, Vivian Hsu.

People often ask me who my "oh xiang" is, and without missing a beat, I say, "Oh man, Vivian, for sure." I mean there's Uma Thurman as a distant second, and maybe some hot babe of the week as third, but for some reason Vivian has been the one every since she first appeared 10 years ago.

And yesterday, I had to go over to a set to show Paul some stuff on the sax for his part, and caught up a little with Ken, one of the singers of F4, who I hadn't seen since before F4 got super famous. So I'm in a little dressing room running through the song with Paul, when I hear Vivian's voice, and look up and sort of uh, gasp, ack, duh...while Paul makes an introduction.

Then my professional side wakes up and I block all that guffawing, and start talking to her in Japanese for some weird reason, before switching back to Chinese, and in the end over to English.

Pop idols are much smaller in real life, but who cares, it's Vivian.

She seems pretty cute to me, but Corbs, why don't you get all ga-ga when you speak to me?

3q2u is an acronym which if said in Chinese and Japanese sounds like "Thank you to you!" Dumb but easy to remember. More >>
