Jazz in Taipei

I'm putting together a new group. It's important to me since I haven't played like that for 5 years. Now it's for my own club, The Living Room. So I've been searching for the right band members. I forgot what a drag it was looking for new players. especially in a limited talent pool. Tonight Brett, Mark and I went down to the Blue Note to see what was happening. It was good to be in the scene again, and hear some music, and I'm glad Tsai lao ban had a full house. That's a long ways from 15 yrs ago when we were helping him build up a jazz clientel. I wondered if these 20+ somethings were really into the music, or more into doing something that was Western in nature. That crowd didn't really exist when we were doing it back then. We were more of a fluke. So it was sort of a reunion as well as a timewarp. Final conclusion: Mark said it best. "Dude, this is so high school jazz band." [Sigh} I guess I have to agree. The music scene hasn't really improved, but I thought it was cool that kids were out there playing a Chinese sort of '60s bebop.

It's going to be more of a challenge than I thought to put together a good band...

3q2u is an acronym which if said in Chinese and Japanese sounds like "Thank you to you!" Dumb but easy to remember. More >>
