Sanlitun

Sanlitun is not really my favorite place to grab a beer, but The Tree is in that area, so that's pretty much the only reason we go. Last night Rueters had their Christmas party there, and we all were enjoying the pizza and company.

On the way out, you have to manuever all the beggars, the endless "lady bar, lady bar?" hawkers, little urchins, and other Dickens-esque street life that congregrate to feed off of drunk foreign money.

I was thinking about what the Chinese must think about these groups of gaggling, drunk young lao wai, clustered outside of bars, falling over, laughing and puking.

As I was getting in my cab, I got my answer. I noticed this little urchin kid hanging next to a group of hugging drunk foreigners. When he got an opening, he ran up and plucked the guy's wallet, and slipped away into the crowd. The guy had no idea. Pretty slick.

A microcosm of doing business here I suppose.

3q2u is an acronym which if said in Chinese and Japanese sounds like "Thank you to you!" Dumb but easy to remember. More >>
