The Buick Riviera concept car, conceived in Shanghai...

The first car I drove was my grandfather's 1963 Buick Riviera. That was one sweet ride. The 425 V-8 put out 360 horsepower. He took me to the cemetery, and told me to drive around. "You can't hurt anyone here," he said. I was about 12 or 13 then. As I got older I was allowed to park it, then after that I pretty much was the chauffeur. So I know a little bit about 1963 Rivieras.

Today while it's snowing outside in Beijing I'm reading a NYT article about Buicks now being designed in China. This caught my eye since a few months ago I asked one of my friends out at GM to arrange a private factory tour for my staff to see Buicks being assembled first hand. So I know a little bit about GM in China.

But putting the two together? I don't know. "SHADES OF 1963 - The 2007 Riviera concept car, conceived in Shanghai," is the title of the photo from the article.

Here's the concept car that has shades of the 1963 Riviera in it:

Here's a photo of the 1963 Riviera, exactly as I remember it. I dunno. I can't really see the shades of influence.

3q2u is an acronym which if said in Chinese and Japanese sounds like "Thank you to you!" Dumb but easy to remember. More >>
