Do you have any sense?
Take the test and find out yourself. I certainly don't have any sense.

Do we really look alike?

Bert is getting a job!
My friend Bert knows a lot of things. He has a lot of initials after his name. He can order beers in perfect ancient 17th century Mandarin. He uses a Mac. Kija and I think he'll have a great job future.

Interesting combo
Chris just sent me a wonderful care package. A book entitled, Start Up, which is about the rise and fall of the Go Corp., and all their financing and partnering woes. Sound familiar? He also included a Led Zeppelin CD of unreleased masters.
I find myself giggling through the book because we've all been through that. It's painful, so you just laugh.
Haven't found a quiet time to crank the CD yet. Been so busy working on getting live acts into the Living Room.

I knew Elvis was still around. But I didn't know he was shrinking.

Taipei tabla troubles...
Where can I find this man? How am I going to put together a new music ensemble without Indian musicians?

If you know a tabla player, send him my way!

Me and Tiff

Moblog ate my weekend
Getting my Panasonic GD88 phone to take a picture and post it on my blog ate away most of my weekend. If it wasn't a fickle Finnish MMS gateway, it was a stubborn Swedish email gateway. Once that was all fixed (thank God I know all the carrier tech teams in town) it was aliases and Sendmail relays and domain mapping. Once everyone knew where we were going, there was the standard Linux whining, with all his ridiculous goofy dependencies. Then of course Mr. XML and Mr. RPC had their say. Once that got worked out, our friend CGI, and his partner BIN, and their pal VAR, stopped by to screw things up. They got taken care of, but then there was that damned slippery snake to deal with: Python. He was properly caged away, but not before I had a visit from Php, who had a problem dealing with his older self. A new set of clothes, a weekend later, and my last issue was simple HTML. A tag, a tuck, and a few bobbypins later, it works.
All this to get a picture to post on a blog, so I can take 8kb snaps of people sticking their tongue out. And I never got a chance to return my rented movie which I never saw.

Jazz in Taipei
I'm putting together a new group. It's important to me since I haven't played like that for 5 years. Now it's for my own club, The Living Room. So I've been searching for the right band members. I forgot what a drag it was looking for new players. especially in a limited talent pool. Tonight Brett, Mark and I went down to the Blue Note to see what was happening. It was good to be in the scene again, and hear some music, and I'm glad Tsai lao ban had a full house. That's a long ways from 15 yrs ago when we were helping him build up a jazz clientel. I wondered if these 20+ somethings were really into the music, or more into doing something that was Western in nature. That crowd didn't really exist when we were doing it back then. We were more of a fluke. So it was sort of a reunion as well as a timewarp. Final conclusion: Mark said it best. "Dude, this is so high school jazz band." [Sigh} I guess I have to agree. The music scene hasn't really improved, but I thought it was cool that kids were out there playing a Chinese sort of '60s bebop.
It's going to be more of a challenge than I thought to put together a good band...

George and Mary
[Prelude]
There's this really stupid bank commercial here from Cosmos Bank featuring two cartoon characters, George & Mary. Cosmos was the first bank to come out with a cash card about 3 years ago, and you always see George and Mary cut outs at the front door, or on billboards, or worse yet, the George and Mary musical theme song TV commercial. It's like Cats meets Jetsons kind of music.
[Dream]
The bank president calls me up. "My god, what do we do?"
"I don't know, what do you normally do?" I reply.
"George has died!"
"Oh that's terrible."
"Now Mary is all alone."
"My condolences. She'll manage."
He sounds panicked. For good reason. How do you explain the death of a cartoon character to the millions of people using their cash cards?
"But how do you promote 'George & Mary' cards when there is no George?" the bank president asks.
"Maybe your marketing people can do a campaign where Mary gets a boyfriend," I offer. "Jack & Mary. Bob & Mary. Steven & Mary. Take your pick."
"But people will be confused. We all could identify with George. He was why people focused on Mary."
"Dude, he's a dead cartoon figure. People will get over it."
Then I hung up and went back to sleep.
