Hey, isn't that my uncle?
Ok, I found this delightful little Taiwan tour guide through the Taipei Kid's site, which linked to Chewin in the Chung.
I think these ladies are probably still working in Peitou off of Kuang Ming Road somewhere. You can see the geriatric men getting out of their Benz limos up there on a Friday night.

Can you say "Does this come with bulletproof windows?"
Sounds like this karaoke royalty collections guy will need to install bullet proof windows on his Land Rover.

Ok I admit it. I enjoy swearing, and I also enjoy teaching Chinese people how to swear effectively in must-swear situations.
What's your favorite swear word?

Brian Funshine flash fooling around fun
Brian Funshine sent me this hilarious link of him in a flash English teaching movie.
I sent him my updated lyrics:
I am watching watching watching the video now, the video now...
I am watching watching watching the video now, the video now...
I am watching watching watching the video now, the video now...
I am viewing in Mozilla, to see what it will do
Cruising all around to check the open source view
I am watching watching watching the video now, the video now...
And incidentally, while you are watching, you might pick up that the melody is from the American Civil war, which happens to also be a song I had to play in the freezing cold at high school football games, and most recently for the Jin Ma Jiang (The Golden Horse Festival).
Unalaska is as Untaiwan as you can get
My "little sister" Laurie lives in Unalaska, which is in the Aleutian Islands. Looking at the photo she sent me it's as Untaiwan as any place I've ever seen.
If you're interested in knowing what she's doing...

24hr flower power
Ok, it's 3:00am, we've closed the club, and are dropping off fresh nian-gao presents to friends who are of course still up, since it's a Friday and they're already getting started on their new year mahjong binge.
We pass a flower market in Neihu and Irene screams "Stop the car!" and we all jump out and wander around the largest display of colors and flowers I have ever seen in my life. A 24 hour flower market? Only in Taiwan.
Of course we buy everything - The eucalyptus plant that smells remarkably like Pledge, various cool herbs, a beautiful hanging plant that's called a "dancing lady," some nice smelling white flowers, a deep green bush named "cigar," a bunch of leafy purple flowers, and an assortment of dog proof horticulture that will look good on the porch, keeping us ahead of the Jones.
The week of rest which is not really rest is upon us again. It's Chinese New Year!

Geeks
Wang Lee Hom dropped by the Living Room tonight for an interview with a reporter. It's private, no crazed fans, and we know each other, so I guess they felt comfortable here.
I hadn't seen him in years since I played a concert with him, but our conversation immediately turns to geek stuff.
"Check this out, I recorded this at home." His latest hip hop track is grooving along. The vocals sound expensive. Studio quality. He's proud. Sounds good.
"Paris or ProTools?"
"ProTools dude."
"What mic?"
"Manley Reference."
"So what's the Manley sound like? I haven't used it before."
"Like a Sony 800G."
"No shit? But you have some serious sheen to that. C'mon, what else is on that?"
"Ok ok, it's going through a Neve preamp, then into a Manley compressor, before the 8088."
"No wonder. I really like that sheen."
"Yeah, I recorded most of this in my apartment and in hotel rooms around China."
"No..."
"Yup, I got this little 2 octave keyboard and a pair of headphones. Fits in my backpack."
"Dude, you're such a geek."
"Absolutely."
